Volkswagen, together with premium e-bike manufacturer n+, has introduced a model that looks more like a modern car than a traditional bicycle. And this time, the spotlight isn't on speed—it's on safety.
The bicycle that sees what you can't
The standout feature of the new model is the Smart View system.
While most cyclists still have to glance over their shoulder to check for approaching traffic, Volkswagen's new e-bike does the job for them.
An HD rear-facing camera and integrated radar sensors continuously monitor traffic behind the rider. Live footage is displayed on a compact screen mounted to the handlebars, and if a vehicle approaches too quickly or enters a blind spot, the system immediately issues a warning.
In essence, the bike is equipped with the cycling equivalent of a car's blind-spot monitoring system.

Brake lights you simply can't miss
Volkswagen believes conventional bicycle lights are no longer enough.
The frame features a full-length LED light strip that functions as a daytime running light. But its smartest features appear while riding.
When the rider slows down, the strip glows bright red, mimicking automotive brake lights.
Before making a turn, it flashes amber to clearly signal the rider's intentions to everyone nearby.
For motorists, these signals feel instantly familiar, making cyclists more predictable and improving safety for everyone on the road.
A helmet that calls for help when you can't
The innovation doesn't stop with the bike itself.
Volkswagen and n+ have also introduced a smart helmet that synchronizes with the bicycle's lighting system.
Whenever the rider activates a turn signal, the helmet mirrors the same light indication, making the cyclist even more visible.
Its most valuable feature, however, is automatic crash detection.
If the helmet detects a severe impact, it can automatically notify pre-selected emergency contacts. It's a feature that could prove invaluable for people who frequently ride alone or commute home late at night.
Smart glasses inspired by fighter jet technology
Another eye-catching accessory is a pair of smart glasses.
They were developed by engineers with experience creating head-up display systems for military aircraft.
While riding, the glasses project speed, battery level, navigation directions, and other essential information directly into the rider's field of vision.
That means there's no need to look down at a smartphone or onboard display, allowing cyclists to keep their eyes focused on the road at all times.
It seems augmented reality is gradually leaving the world of science fiction and becoming part of everyday transportation.

The electric bicycle market has long moved beyond competing solely on motor power or battery range.

The new Sport and Crossover models are positioned firmly in the premium segment.
Prices start at around $5,300 for the bicycle itself, while the smart helmet and smart glasses each cost approximately $670.
It's certainly not an inexpensive package. However, Volkswagen is targeting riders who see advanced safety as a worthwhile investment rather than simply looking for the lowest price.
If this concept gains widespread acceptance, cameras, radar systems, and blind-spot monitoring could become as standard on bicycles as ABS and airbags are in today's cars.
