You might enjoy a glass of your favorite drink, but here’s a wake-up call: alcohol contains calories. In fact, a modest glass of booze has as many calories as a large slice of pepperoni pizza.

But don’t worry! Here are some tips to keep those calories in check while you enjoy your drinks:

Choose Low-Sugar Drinks

Pure alcohol like vodka, gin, rum, tequila, and whiskey contains about 65 calories per shot. Just avoid mixing them with high-sugar mixers like cola or lemonade. Opt for diet tonic or plain soda, and even water if you’ve had a big meal.

Drink Prosecco

Prosecco has around 70 calories per glass, less than champagne which has about 95 calories. Enjoy it straight, without sugary cocktail additions.

Avoid Sweet Wines

Go for dry wines which have less than 1 gram of sugar per ounce, compared to sweet wines that may have up to 2 grams. Dry reds like Pinot Noir or Merlot, and dry whites like Pinot Blanc or Sauvignon Blanc are good choices.

Embrace Light Beer

Light beer contains about 100 calories per can, 50 calories less than regular beer. However, you'll need to drink twice as much to get the same buzz. If light beer isn’t your thing, Guinness has around 126 calories, a bit less than other beers.

Opt for Strong Spirits and Low-Sugar Cocktails

If you prefer cocktails, choose those with low sugar content. A mojito without sugar syrup, just soda, lime, mint, and rum, is a great choice. Martini, Old Fashioned, or Negroni are other options with less sugar. Make sure to snack before drinking.

Enjoy your drinks wisely and stay fit!
