If you thought modern SUVs had nothing left to surprise you with, Xiaomi has a different idea. The company that made its name with smartphones has unveiled the Skynomad N90 Max Explorer Edition — a vehicle that transforms into a two-story camper at the touch of a button, complete with a bedroom, its own climate control system, and even heated flooring.
This is no longer just an SUV. It is a true mobile base camp for road trips, fishing adventures, camping weekends, or escaping the city whenever you want.
The SUV that grows upward
The Explorer Edition's standout feature is a pop-up roof built directly into the body.
While driving, it looks like a conventional full-size SUV. But once parked, the roof rises to reveal a fully functional second level. Inside, ceiling height expands to 2.29 meters, making it possible to stand almost completely upright.
In other words, Xiaomi has created a compact house on wheels without the need for a trailer or a tent.
A second floor for those who refuse to sleep on the ground
The upper platform offers around two square meters of living space and supports up to 200 kilograms.
And it is much more than just a sleeping area.
It comes equipped with everything needed for a comfortable night outdoors:
- its own climate control system;
- dedicated lighting;
- charging ports for smartphones, laptops, and other devices.
That means you can work, read, or stream your favorite series right beneath the vehicle's roof.
A bed in seconds — without removing the seats
The Explorer Edition seats five instead of seven, but that trade-off comes with a major benefit.
The rear seats fold down electronically to create a flat bed measuring 1.87 × 1.24 meters.
No complicated mechanisms. No removing seats.
Press one button, and the cabin instantly becomes a bedroom.
Heated floors? Yes, even inside an SUV
Xiaomi decided that comfort should not stop at your front door.
The floor is finished in aluminum with a wood-like texture and includes heating that warms it to 38°C.
Even during chilly autumn or winter nights, you can walk barefoot inside without feeling cold metal beneath your feet.
For camping enthusiasts, it is one of the most unexpected and practical features of the new SUV.
Nearly 1,700 kilometers without worrying about charging
The Skynomad N90 Max features a next-generation hybrid powertrain.
The key specifications are impressive:
- all-wheel drive;
- dual electric motors producing a combined 310 kW;
- a 76 kWh battery pack;
- a 60-liter fuel tank.
The SUV can travel up to 464 kilometers on electric power alone under the Chinese CLTC cycle, while total driving range reaches 1,705 kilometers in the standard model and 1,688 kilometers in the Explorer Edition.
In short, you can set off on a long adventure and almost forget about searching for a charging station.
An SUV that accelerates like a sports car
Despite its adventure-focused design, performance is equally impressive.
It sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.9 seconds.
Ride comfort comes from an air suspension system with electronically controlled dampers that continuously adjust stiffness depending on road conditions.
City streets, highways, or rugged trails — the SUV adapts automatically.
More technology than many apartments
The cabin runs on HyperOS, Xiaomi's own connected ecosystem.
The vehicle supports up to six displays at the same time, including:
- a digital instrument cluster;
- a central infotainment display;
- a head-up display;
- dedicated rear passenger screens.
It also includes:
- a 9-liter compressor refrigerator;
- a premium 25-speaker audio system;
- multiple USB ports and wireless charging.
It is essentially a mobile office, a home theater, and a camper rolled into one vehicle.
A smart driving assistant that even spots low obstacles
Safety is handled by Xiaomi's HAD driver assistance system.
It uses two LiDAR sensors:
- a front LiDAR for road scanning and driving assistance;
- a rear solid-state LiDAR for parking and detecting low obstacles that cameras often miss.
This should make maneuvering in tight or difficult spaces significantly easier.
How much does this SUV of the future cost?
Xiaomi has already opened orders for both versions.
The pricing is highly competitive considering everything included:
- Skynomad N90 Max — 269,900 yuan.
- Skynomad N90 Max Explorer Edition — 299,900 yuan.
Buyers will be able to choose from seven exterior colors: burgundy, green, blue, gray, khaki, white, and black.
