For the first time, the official Kia catalog has featured an accessory made from ocean plastic — a trunk mat made from plastic waste.
Kia has released its first official accessory made from ocean plastic. The material for the EV3's trunk mat comes from waste collected by Kia’s partner, The Ocean Cleanup, from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. The mat will be released in a limited edition and will only be available in certain markets at the same time as the EV3 launch.
In 2022, Kia signed a seven-year partnership agreement with the Dutch nonprofit The Ocean Cleanup, which is dedicated to cleaning the oceans of plastic. Now, the company has unveiled its first official accessory — a trunk mat for the EV3 crossover, made from plastic waste recovered from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. However, only 40% of the mat is made from ocean plastic, with the rest consisting of thermoplastic elastomer and inorganic polymers.
Today, components made from waste can be found in many Kia models, including the flagship EV9 crossover, whose flooring is made entirely from old fishing nets. The total weight of components made using plant-based materials or recycled plastics reaches 34 kilograms. Koreans use PET bottles to make upholstery and mats, and car bodies are painted with water-based paints that do not contain harmful isomers of benzene, toluene, and xylene.
