In the world of sneakers, some things never age — classics that stand the test of time. Converse Pro Leather is a perfect example. This year, the iconic model celebrates its 50th anniversary, and Converse Japan has chosen to honor the milestone with two vintage-inspired releases sure to excite any sneakerhead.
The Pro Leather 50th anniversary project is part of the archive-focused TimeLine series and brings together the expertise of two Japanese vintage specialists: Katsufumi Tokunaga of SOMA in Shimokitazawa and Takaya Yamada of MAGFORLIA in Fujieda. Each brought a unique perspective to the 1976 classic, adding modern comfort and premium materials while maintaining the authentic feel of the era.
Tokunaga presents a black and gray palette with textured leather and suede panels — a perfect balance of structure and retro style. Yamada opted for a bold purple and gold combination, directly inspired by his personal vintage sneaker archive. Each pair is stamped with “Directed by” and the creator’s name on the inner waist — a subtle but important detail for collectors.
While retaining the ’70s aesthetic, the Japanese releases feature updated internal construction: OrthoLite insoles ensure modern walking comfort, and attention to detail includes spare laces for each release and an original carton in the style of 1976. The TimeLine tag completes the package — a true journey through history that you can wear on your feet.
