Ben Affleck Returns to the Director's Chair: Netflix Unveils Tense Teaser for Thriller "Animals"

Some films scare us with monsters, shootouts or haunting music. Others need nothing more than a single phone call to turn an ordinary life into a nightmare. That is exactly the premise of the new thriller “Animals”, starring Ben Affleck and Kerry Washington as a married couple whose world falls apart after their son is kidnapped.

Netflix has already released the film’s first teaser, and it is almost completely free of dialogue. Instead, viewers are thrown straight into the heart of a family catastrophe: anxiety, frantic movement, money, phone calls and decisions whose consequences could prove far more terrifying than the crime itself.

Ben Affleck Is Doing Almost Everything Again

This project holds particular significance for Affleck. In “Animals”, he serves simultaneously as an actor, director, producer and co-writer.

In effect, the film marks his return to a major role both behind and in front of the camera since 2023. Affleck co-wrote the screenplay with Connor O. McIntyre and Billy Ray.

The film is produced under Artists Equity, the company founded by Affleck and Matt Damon. For the Hollywood duo, it is another major project that puts the emphasis not only on familiar names, but also on an auteur-driven approach to genre filmmaking.

The Perfect Family That Falls Apart After One Phone Call

At the beginning of the story, Affleck’s character is a candidate for mayor of Los Angeles. Together with his wife, played by Kerry Washington, he appears to lead a life that is almost flawless from the outside.

But one phone call changes everything in an instant.

Their young son is kidnapped.

Now the parents must urgently raise an enormous ransom. But the problem is not simply about money. Every minute works against them, and every decision could put their child’s life at risk.

And this is where an ordinary crime thriller turns into a story about the limits of human endurance.

A Teaser Without Words Can Be More Powerful Than Dialogue

Netflix has chosen not to reveal too many details, presenting “Animals” through a virtually dialogue-free teaser.

It is a bold move. Instead of explaining the plot to the audience, the filmmakers allow viewers to interpret the characters’ emotions for themselves.

Panic, glances, cars, a phone, money and desperation gradually come together to form a single picture.

The absence of dialogue only makes the tension stronger. The audience does not know everything that is happening, forcing viewers to pay closer attention to every detail.

When Power Is No Longer Enough

The protagonist’s profession adds another intriguing layer to the story.

This is not simply a father trying to save his child. He is a public figure at the center of political attention. His life is tied to reputation, elections and constant public scrutiny.

But when his child is kidnapped, all of that status suddenly becomes almost meaningless.

Position, money, connections and political influence may prove insufficient when his own son’s life is at stake.

That contrast could become one of the film’s biggest strengths.

Kerry Washington Is More Than Just the Protagonist’s Wife

Kerry Washington plays Affleck’s character’s wife, but judging by the film’s concept, her character is set to become an equally important part of the psychological battle.

The couple find themselves in a situation where fear can easily turn into conflict. When there is almost no time left and their child is in the hands of criminals, even the people closest to each other may begin to question one another.

And that raises the central question: how far are parents willing to go to get their child back?

It seems that the answer to this question will form the heart of “Animals”.

A Strong Cast for the New Thriller

Alongside Affleck and Washington, the film features Steven Yeun, Gillian Anderson, Adriana Paz, Ray Fisher, Matt Gerald, Jacob Estrada and Luis Gerardo Méndez.

A cast of this caliber is particularly well suited to a thriller where the key element may not be spectacular action sequences, but the psychological tension between the characters.

And judging by the first teaser, atmosphere appears to be one of the filmmakers’ main priorities.

Not Just a Kidnapping, but a Test of Character

The most interesting thing about “Animals” is not the kidnapping itself. Cinema has already told plenty of stories built around similar situations.

What is far more fascinating is watching what happens to a person when the rules of ordinary life stop working.

Can you remain rational when your child could be killed? Can a married couple preserve their trust when every decision could prove fatal? And is there a line that a father or mother would refuse to cross to save their own child?

These questions could make the film much darker than an ordinary crime thriller.

When Does It Premiere?

“Animals” will arrive in select theaters and become available for global streaming on Netflix on October 9, 2026.

And if the first teaser truly reflects the tone of the entire film, audiences are not in for a lightweight action movie, but a nerve-racking psychological thriller about fear, family and decisions that cannot be undone.

Ben Affleck is returning to the director’s chair, this time built around one of the simplest yet most terrifying human situations imaginable: someone has taken away what you value most, and you are willing to do anything to get it back.
