Typically, protection means using condoms. But let’s be honest: sometimes, in the heat of the moment, condoms are forgotten. And before you know it, you’re frantically searching the medicine cabinet for antiseptics, hoping to avoid the consequences.

But there’s good news! Scientists have found a more effective solution. A report presented at a conference in Seattle reveals a new way to prevent infection. Taking the antibiotic doxycycline within 72 hours of unprotected sex can reduce the risk of contracting syphilis and ureaplasmosis several times over. However, it’s important to note that this drug is not effective against gonorrhea.

The study, conducted among 232 men with active sex lives, showed that only 24% of those who took doxycycline after risky contact became infected, compared to 39% in the group that did not take antibiotics.

Thus, science offers a new way to protect yourself from the unwanted consequences of casual encounters.
